Finding “Reul na Mara” was easy. Clearly recently painted in traditional black and white its exterior looks immaculate.
The first thing we noticed was the quiet of the surroundings and the beautiful views over farmland and rugged hills. Arriving in time for late afternoon sun, we dropped our bags, popped a cork and sat on the wooden bench outside the conservatory to soak in the island peacefulness.
Past the conservatory ( where we spent most of our time sitting and watching sheep, cows, frolicking lambs and frequently stunning sunsets), you enter a cottage with the feel of a family home…..not sterile rental accommodation.
The living room is spacious and comfortable and the book -shelves both upstairs and down attest to the varied reading interests of the family.
A hi-fi, TV and high-speed wifi router provide access to the outside world, although we never needed outside distractions as the views are captivating enough.
A recently renovated kitchen and modern bathroom are fitted to a high standard and we were left with nothing wanting. All the bedrooms were freshly, beautifully decorated with pretty wall coverings, distressed paintwork, delightful bunting and gorgeous white bedding. White fluffy towels in the bathroom complete this utterly charming cottage.
The property has off-road parking, laundry drying facilities and a secure garden shed.
This cottage and The Isle of Barra from its aquamarine water to its white sandy beaches we simply adored and….we can’t wait to go back.

This was an excellent place to spend a holiday. Right down to the decor (a mix of the old and new) it is exactly what you would hope a holiday cottage near the sea would be.
It has all the modern amenities you need.
My daughter loved the big enclosed garden and bought a ball specially to play in it.
There are a tonne of family games in the sideboard upstairs to entertain on the wet days or nights.
I loved it and cant wait to go back again next year.
